Advocacy, Political Activities, and Canadian Charities

Legal research will enlighten charities and non-profit sector groups about the state of the law concerning their political engagement and advocacy

Summary

This project aims to enlighten non-profit and charitable sector groups about the degree to which they can engage in political advocacy. Following the implementation of Bill C-38 in the 2012 federal budget, the sector experienced a “chill” due to insecurity about the limitations on political advocacy. Limited legal research has been undertaken to explain the new boundaries and limitations on non-profit and charitable groups’ engagement in policy making. This project aims to undertake substantive legal research and provide non-profit groups with the information needed to legally and confidently engage in political advocacy.
