Canadian Tour

Linkage and exchange between Sweden and Canada could provide valuable lessons to Canadian policy makers about how to improve the Canadian health care system

Summary

The purpose of this project was to inform Canadian health care policymakers by facilitating Johan Hjertqvist’s Canadian tour of seven Canadian cities, including Halifax, Toronto, Winnipeg, Brandon, Dauphin, Saskatoon and Edmonton. During his tour, Hjertqvist informed Canadian audiences about Sweden’s health policy reforms, which he praised as highly successful. Since the early 1990s, 25% of Stockholm’s medical services have been provided by private companies and the reforms have resulted in a more transparent system. He noted that private health services providers were delivering health services 10-20% more efficiently than their public counterparts.
