Addressing Essential Skills Gaps in an Occupational Health and Safety Training Program

Essential literacy skills can be effectively incorporated into vocational training

Summary

Many employed adults in Canada do not have strong essential skills like literacy, numeracy and document usage skills. These adults are more likely to be involved in workplace accidents than their counterparts with higher levels of essential skills. This pilot project will result in a modified occupational health and safety hoisting and rigging program that seeks to improve essential skills while also teaching specific safety knowledge. The projected outcome is a methodology that will allow employers to increase workplace safety by teaching job specific skills as well as increasing essential skills.
