Caring For the Caregiver: Service for Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients at the End of Life

Family caregivers’ health should be a priority for palliative health medical services in improving Canadian’s quality of life

Summary

This project identifies the difficulties faced by family caregivers during the processes of care and bereavement. The Caring for the Caregiver project recognizes that more needs to be done to protect and support in-home caregivers who reportedly suffer from financial insecurity, depression, anxiety, and exhaustion while managing the care of dying loved ones. The aim of the project is to develop an evidence-based program to train volunteers to guide and emotionally support family caregivers in the home. With a focus on prevention, it will teach volunteers to observe and report deteriorating situations so that, if professional intervention is required, it can occur in time to prevent a crisis for the family caregiver or the patient.
